Hyperfocal Focus

Posted by admin on Nov 5, 2009 in Photo Tips

In optics and photography, hyperfocal distance is a distance beyond which all objects can be brought into an “acceptable” focus.  The concept of hyperfocal distance is easy: focus a lens at the hyperfocal distance and everything in the photograph from some near distance to infinity will be sharp. When the lens is focused on the hyperfocal distance, the depth of field extends from half the hyperfocal distance to infinity.

To get best results you need to stop and think about the depth of field you need for the scene, and also take in to account the optical characteristics of your camera and lens. If you shoot a panorama inside the furthest thing from the camera is likely to be only a few metres away, so there is no need to have a massive depth of field. If you stop down to f/22 you won’t only finish up shooting long exposures and risking camera shake, but probably get a disappointingly soft picture because of diffraction. You need to understand the hyperfocal distance and diffraction.

Landscape photographs are often taken with the lens focused at the hyperfocal distance; near and distant objects are sharp in the photos.
